OFFICIATING ERROR
GAME ROUND #21

Palmeiras vs Vasco de Gama
August 27
, 2023

WRONGFULLY DISALLOWED GOAL RESULTS IN 1-0 PALMEIRAS VICTORY, AND 3 POINT GAIN IN TABLE

GOAL DISALLOWED, VAR LINES DRAWN IMPROPERLY TO CANCEL A VALID GOAL

Result of Error: Palmeiras escapes with all 3 points during critical game in 2023 championship; Vasco loses opportunity to dictate game with early goal

The Play:  The cross was played by the head of a Vasco player in an advanced position, before being played by two players from Palmeiras, before ultimately being struck for an apparent goal by a Vasco player. The Vasco header was wrongfully ruled offsides.

The Debate:  Public debate centered around the issue of whether or not the initial offsides (of the header) is irrelevant, as the goal was arguably produced from a new sequence, after several other touches of the ball.  This may be a good argument for the goal to be counted, but it is also just as relevant that the VAR lines were drawn on the feet, from a cameral angle trailing the play. From a trailing camera angle, if the Palmeiras player's body can be seen equal or downfield of the Vasco player, then it is clear that a proper view (along the line of play) would demonstrate the Palmeiras defender to be further downfield than the attacking Vasco player.  If the body of the player is the reference, then the attacking player could not have been called offsides, and the goal should have been counted.

CONCLUSION:  Independent Report Confirms Valid Goal was Wrongfully Cancelled
